Abstract

The report describes the preliminary assessment undertaken by Hydraulics Research to evaluate the morphological effect of river works. The execution of a Water Authority survey to assemble information on existing schemes described. Analysis of the results reveals that Water Authorities are better at judging whether sedimentation problems will occur as the result of a scheme than they are at judging whether erosion problems will result. The sedimentation and erosion problems which result from river works are described. An outline of the types of maintenance required to counter these problems is given. Current methods for predicting sediment movement under UK conditions are reviewed.
