Abstract

The Texas General Land Office (TGLO) developed the 2019 Texas Coastal Resiliency Master Plan to provide a strategic pathway to restore, enhance and protect the Texas coast. The Master Plan divides the Texas coast into 4 planning regions and identifies several tiered projects to prioritize and address risks and threats to the vitality of coastal communities, habitats, and industries. In addition to projects identified in each of the planning regions, the Master Plan recommends several Coastwide Tier 1 Projects such as plans, programs, studies, and data collection efforts to help further the understanding of the Texas coast and benefit future planning efforts. One such project is Longshore Sediment Transport Modeling (Project ID R0-12) to better understand where, when and how beach nourishment projects should take place. This understanding is fulfilled in a comprehensive sediment budget analysis of the Texas coast and is the primary purpose of the project reported herein. Past efforts, investigators, and authors have developed sediment budgets to describe longshore transport processes along the Texas coast, each spanning different periods and applying varying approaches. This project builds upon the body of existing knowledge and develops a comprehensive sediment budget for the Gulf-facing beaches and inlets of the Texas coast. Due to the length of the Texas coast, four separate regional scale sand transport models were used to support the development of sediment budgets for each planning region. This paper describes the development of a sediment budget for these for planning regions.
