Abstract

A survey carried out by HR Wallingford for CIRIA has shown that, despite considerable amount of past research on channel protection materials, and in particular on riprap, the available methods gave widely-varying predictions. An extensive literature review on riprap sizing formulae is presented in this interim report as well as some general notions on turbulence generated downstream of hydraulics structures. It was found that the existing guidelines do not apply to highly turbulent flows and that the nominal tone size given by the different equations can vary as much as four times.
