The optimum location for a canal sediment extractor

Russell, C. (1991) The optimum location for a canal sediment extractor. HR Wallingford, Wallingford.

Abstract

A sediment extractor is a device for ejecting sand or gravel from irrigation canals or power channels. It operates on a near layer of the canal flow which usually contains a high proportion of the sediment being carried.

This report describes two methods for predicting the adaptation length. The first method uses simplifying assumptions to solve the equations which describes the sediment settling and mixing processes, and the results are used to produce a table for predicting adaptation length. The second method uses a computational fluid dynamics computer code (‘PHOENIX’) to simulate the conditions in a channel downstream of a structure without the use of simplifying assumptions.
