Abstract

At a number of locations around the UK coastline, sand banks play a significant role in coastal defence and hence it is important to understand how these banks have developed and be able to predict how they might change in the future. It is also important to be able to determine the linkages between the banks and the coastline as these linkages are likely to be important at the coastal process sub-cell level. To improve on the existing understanding a consortium was commissioned by MAFF to investigate the short, medium and long-term behaviour of sand banks, their interaction with the adjacent coastline and their influence on the forcing processes acting at that coastline. During these two year research project the needs of industry were identified and addressed. An important result was the development of a generic classification scheme for sand banks. The classification scheme forms a basis for understanding the context of the bank and the process that are likely to be responsible for its evolution and maintenance. The state-of-the-art in bank modelling has been reviewed and the applicability of various approaches to the different banks discussed. An improved understanding of sediment transport processes applicable to banks was obtained. Further understanding of banks was gained through the application of a number of analysis and modelling techniques to predict the occurrence of the banks in the Southern Bight of the North Sea, and the evolution of sands on the East Anglian coast and Pembrokeshire coast. The advantages and drawbacks of the various techniques are discussed. A methodology for assessing the role of banks in the coastal environment has been suggested.
