Abstract

Controlled drainage has the potential to improve water use efficiency, maintain crop yields in periods of water stress, and ensure that land drainage systems work to the maximum benefit of farmers. The report identifies arid, umid, and tropical areas where irrigation and drainage are widely practiced, and where controlled drainage has the potential to be beneficial to farmer groups. Particular attention is paid to countries that are predicted as suffering from water shortage over the next 25 years, and where controlled drainage coulld improve water use efficiency.
